California Surf House

California Coast

Nestled within California’s coastline, this surf house embraces the elemental characters of its site and the rich history of the surrounding neighborhood. Originally a modest 1950s home, the original design draws on midcentury modern principles, utilizing exposed beams, glass walls, and a material palette that reflects the rugged shoreline and resilient coastal vegetation. Sited along the adjacent shoreline, the home offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. The scope of work included updating essential systems and adding a quaint second story for additional bedrooms, all while preserving the original home’s honesty of materials and elemental coherence. Local unfinished redwood planks, original to the house, carry decades of unique patina that anchor the interiors of this home to its surrounding site. The result is a home that is unpretentious and where simplicity, light, and the dramatic beauty of the ocean converge.

“More than sixty years after its original construction, Curtis & Windham were brought in to enhance the structure without compromising its elemental integrity.”
