Contemporary Lake House
Austin, Texas
Perched on nine acres of densely treed land overlooking Lake Austin, this contemporary lake house occupies a rare elevated site within the city. Its placement carefully preserves the property’s colossal live oaks while responding to strict local tree-protection regulations. The design balances traditional and modern influences, with a symmetrical front façade for privacy and a transparent rear opening onto terraces and a serene pool, framing uninterrupted views of the lake and rolling wooded hills. A long, shallow plan extends through the house, linking an enfilade of rooms that each engage differently with the landscape. Brick and steel elements animate the façade, providing texture and contrast while complementing the natural tones of the site. The adjacent outdoor spaces are designed for year-round use, with terraces, porches, and fireplaces extending living areas into nature and emphasizing the connection between the home and landscape.
“The paneled living room in this contemporary lake house takes cues from Sir John Soane's Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, setting an ideal backdrop for gathering. The lime wash finish in the space feels “painted over time, giving it a wisdom and maturity.”
