Del Monte Residence and Gardens
Houston, Texas
With this project, we approached the stimulating task of adapting the scale and volume of a typical eighteenth-century French residence to a twenty-first-century neighborhood lot in Houston, Texas. We sought to create a program of rooms that would satisfy both the social and private needs of our clients, all while uniting and formalizing the function of the surrounding landscape… a true aesthetic balancing act. The L-shaped house that resulted from these challenges realizes the full potential of a French salon, which is carefully distanced from the comparatively private residential structure. Artful terraces, porches, gardens, and pavilions both resolve the architectural plan and provide a verdant background to compliment the pale pink stucco and bright limestone facing of the property.

“When you’re working from such an established historical model, you must evolve the plan a great deal to allow for the ease of contemporary living. What makes this house so successful is how simple it looks, at the end of the day.”
