west lane residence
Houston, Texas
We often joke that “Miesian architecture” is not a term regularly thrown about in the offices of Curtis & Windham, but when the opportunity to adapt such a structure presented itself, we found ourselves eagerly accepting the challenge and change of pace. Originally designed in 1957 by Bolton & Barnstone, this house was ready for a rehabilitation that could adapt to a changing family dynamic. Our addition of a primary suite was carefully inserted, without disrupting the clarity of the original house. Restraint became the word of the day, and the resulting rigorous simplicity blended seamlessly with Bolton & Barnstone’s original design.
“For a largely classically inspired architecture firm to work on a house of a different language, you have to realize that modernism is history too. Once we realized that, the project really opened up and became full of new potential.”
