St. John’s School Campus Center

Houston, Texas

When we first began to design a new building for St. John’s Upper School, we quickly realized that we had stumbled upon a marvelous opportunity. We could meet the programmatic responsibilities of a dining hall, kitchen, classrooms, administrative offices, bookstore, and underground parking lot, but we could also seek to develop the full potential of the campus. We could create a new sense of place, replete with beauty and permanence that would provide a natural compliment to the school’s educational ideals. The resulting 10,000 square foot Flores Hall speaks to multiple scales, that of the neighborhood in which it sits, the Collegiate Gothic limestone campus which it faces, and the hundreds of students and teachers which circulate around its halls every single day.

Recipient of 2015 John Staub Award, ICAA Texas

“It’s actually quite simple, when you think about it. They asked for a building, and we gave them a campus.”
