Willowick Residence
Houston, Texas
This English style house, which unfolds along the banks of Buffalo Bayou in the estate section of River Oaks, draws upon our clients fond childhood memories of rambling New England country estates, adapted to fit into a very different environment. We looked to the lofty spatial relationships of these traditional houses, and worked to maintain their ratios while opening up certain areas of the house to foster a greater connection with the landscape. The resulting design is just contemporary enough to pass modern muster, while remaining faithful to the period of inspiration.
“Though it breaks from the local vernacular of brick houses, this idiosyncratic response proved most appropriate to the family in question, who had a great history relating back to the building of large American country houses. The unique, large size of the property allowed us to tailor a solution that did not need to respond the aesthetics of its neighbors. We leaned into the colors of the surrounding woods, and brought out their quality in the colors of the rocks and timbers featured throughout..”
