Estancia del Rio
Santa Fe, NM
In Northern New Mexico, particularly in the region of the Rio Chama in which this property rests, the starkly magnificent landscape reigns supreme. The American modernist Georgia O’Keeffe lived and worked in the very same region for the greater part of her artistic career; it is not a landscape that one could willingly ignore. When we were given the opportunity to work here, we knew the right response would be to design a house that would relax into the surrounding terrain, becoming one with the colors and materials of the desert. We explored forms shaped by the landscape itself, and delivered dramatic views of the river, mesa, and sky along the full length of this cliff-top dwelling.
“This was potentially the best site we’ve ever had the opportunity to work on, and we really didn’t want to mess it up! We designed the house to feel invisible on the land… it’s the closest we have ever gotten to a truly indigenous building.”
